What is IELTS?
International English Language Testing System commonly known as IELTS, is a language test designed to evaluate proficiency in English language in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking. IELTS is used for immigration, studies and employment purposes, especially in countries like the United States (U.S), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom (U.K).
In most countries where English is the main language of communication, evidence of acceptable English language skills is a prerequisite for applicants and international graduates seeking professional registration. The required proficiency levels vary between organizations, professions, by country and by jurisdiction. It is up to individual professional registration bodies to determine the IELTS band score and version of the test they require.
A lot of students are unaware about the significance of IELTS scores. Foreign universities and visa granting authorities need to be sure that you will not have communication issues while staying in the country. You need to show a good understanding and strong command over English language and that is why your overall IELTS scores are so important. Another common doubt students have is whether IELTS is a compulsory exam or not. No, IELTS isn’t compulsory in all university admissions. Many universities might not even require IELTS scores for admission purposes.
But if you don’t take IELTS, you have very less chances of getting the visa as the visa officers may not be convinced about your English proficiency without IELTS scores. There lies the importance of taking IELTS test. A high score in IELTS test make immigration procedures easier. Hence, it is better to take IELTS and aim to score at least 6 bands overall. You can take IELTS test with British Council or IDP as they organize the test four times a month. The British Council and IDP global schedule for test dates are 48 days per year.
Many countries insist in presenting evidence of English language proficiency. Your IELTS scores can be of great help in such situations. IELTS is accepted for many visa categories as well as permanent residency in many countries. It is also a requirement for some professional organizations and accrediting bodies of Australia.
If you are applying for a work visa, professional recognition or for permanent residency in Canada, IELTS scores are the evidence of your proficiency in English language. IELTS General Training is the only internationally available English proficiency test accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for immigration to Canada.
The New Zealand government asks for IELTS as evidence of English language proficiency for many visas, including those within the Skilled Migrant, Investor and Entrepreneur, Residence from Work and Parent categories.
